Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was one of the few members of Trump's new cabinet with actual bona fides and an even demeanor, giving hope that he might serve as one of the grownups in the room. But once settled in, he's become one of the leading apparatchiks of Trump 2.0.

Blame-shifting for soaring US oil prices, Bessent declared, "Ukraine has decided that they want to blow up Russian energy assets and refined products." Sure. In Ukraine's desperate war of survival, this administration prefers the Russian point of view. Betraying our friends while embracing our adversaries is the Trump way. And as always in a Trumpian narrative, objective facts are set to one side. Russian petroleum products are banned from the US market.
