Restoring Balance -- Tip O’Neill, 47th speaker of the House of Representatives, is credited with the observation “All politics is local.”
So that must be kept in mind first and foremost regarding the midterm elections. Trump may lie on stage in states that aren’t Michigan about Abdul El-Sayid being a jihadist or in states that aren’t Texas that James Talarico is a vegan (or in states that aren’t Ohio that Jon Husted has a nice ass), but the citizens in Michigan, Texas and, yes, Ohio, have their particular concerns, so that must be kept in mind first and foremost.
But because all politics nowadays go back to Trump, there is a national aspect to even local races for the House and Senate. The Republican-led Congress has proven itself to be totally supine, letting Trump do whatever he wants to, even in cases (e.g., tariffs) in which it is Congress’ job.
So should the Democrats win the House and/or Senate, those new or repeat members will have the opportunity to restore some balance to the co-equal branches, which apparently the Republicans are incapable of doing.—Stephen Macaulay/Pundit-at-Large
